Middleboro School Committee ‘ahead of the game’ in superintendent search

MIDDLEBORO – The Middleboro School Committee took the first steps to form its screening committee for superintendent candidates at its Sept. 24 meeting.

The committee decided that the screening committee will have 13 members, including two school committee members who have not been chosen yet.

The remaining 11 will be chosen of other various stakeholders in the school district and the community. An application will soon be put out to field members to interview and screen superintendent candidates.  Sean Costello, a consultant from the Massachusetts Association of School Committees, or MASC, encouraged the committee to include a student. 

Costello said the school committee was “in really good shape timeline-wise for this search.” The school committee previously approved a timeline for the search, which will conclude in December.

Over the coming weeks, the school committee will publish a survey produced by MASC that asks students, parents, faculty and community members about what they want the next superintendent to focus on. Costello will also hold a community forum on Thursday, Oct. 15 as well as focus groups for school employees.

Using the data from the survey and community forums, a two-person subcommittee will decide what qualifications and selection criteria to use on the superintendent job posting, which will be published in late October.

The screening committee will interview semifinalists in November, and the finalists will be announced on Dec. 3. From there, the school committee will interview finalists and appoint a new superintendent to start on July 1, 2027.
