MIDDLEBORO — A Middleboro man who already had several warrants out for his arrest faces additional felony charges after he stabbed a police officer twice with a steak knife during an incident the morning of Wednesday, Aug. 14, according to Middleboro Police. 

In addition to three active arrest warrants for which he will also be held, forty-two-year-old Kevin MacDonald has now been arrested and charged with assault to murder, three counts of assault with a dangerous weapon, two counts of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, resisting arrest and disorderly conduct.

MacDonald was arraigned at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 14 in Wareham District court where he pleaded not guilty on all charges. 

He is being held at Plymouth County House of Correction without bail and will appear for a detention hearing on Sept. 13, according to court documents. 

Middleboro police reported they responded to a call from MacDonald’s mother early Wednesday morning in which she stated that MacDonald was acting erratic inside his home located at 284 Cherry St. 

MacDonald’s mother stated she believed “he was on something,” police said.  

One of the officers who responded to the call stated that MacDonald has a long history of drug use. 

MacDonald responded by yelling obscenities and threatening that “someone is going to lose their life” from inside his bedroom when he saw officers had arrived outside his home, police stated. 

Police decided to enter the room after making several unsuccessful attempts to de-escalate the situation. Law enforcement officials determined it was unsafe to leave a “volatile” MacDonald with his parents, who were also in the home, according to the report. 

Police were told by MacDonald’s parents that there were no weapons in the room. 

MacDonald put up a mattress to block their entry when law enforcement officials attempted to enter his bedroom. One of the officers reached around the mattress, and MacDonald responded by stabbing him twice in the forearm with a steak knife, police stated. 

Officers had to hit MacDonald twice with a taser to be able to put him in handcuffs and take him into custody. 

The injured officer was transported by Coastal Ambulance to Tobey Hospital, where he was treated and released, police reports stated. 

MacDonald was transported to the Middleborough Police Department for booking, and was later transported to a Beth Israel Hospital for treatment of his taser wounds.

According to Middleboro Police Chief Joseph Perkins, the injured officer is “doing well.”

"I'm very proud of our officers who displayed great restraint and professionalism in dealing with a dangerous, armed individual during a difficult situation," said Chief Perkins. 

"I have spoken with our injured officer and he is doing well. Police officers are required to respond to all manner of unpredictable calls and situations, where their job requires them to place themselves between a dangerous, armed individual and protect citizens."
