Middleboro Little League season marches into action

MIDDLEBORO — Baseball season began with a strike — at least 10 of them — when last year’s Little League World Series team threw out the first pitch at Middleboro Little League’s opening day ceremony.

The first pitches came after this year’s teams, ranging from age 4 to age 12, paraded through the Fields of Dreams on E Grove Street on the morning of Saturday, April 15.

The teams were led by a Middleboro Police car and walked with coaches and parents to line up around the perimeter of the field.

Baseball season returning is “exciting as always,” said Middleboro Little League President John Cannavo, who is in his 20th season with the organization.

Each player had their name called when teams were introduced, and there were audible calls from the crowd of players telling fellow ballplayers to do the “griddy” dance while running onto the field.

The ones who did the dance got big roars from other little leaguers, and some other players did cartwheels and threw their hats as they were introduced.

The teams then lined up in the infield while local singer Savannah Byrne sang the National Anthem.

Cannavo then told the attendees to enjoy the season and cherish the moments because they do not last forever.

“It goes quick, whether you’re a tee ball parent for the first time here or a major league parent for your kid’s 12-year-old season,” Cannavo said.
