Members sought for new Diversity, Inclusion and Equity Task Force

Feb 24, 2023

MIDDLEBORO — In an effort to establish “a more inclusive community,’’ The Middleboro school community is seeking members for a Diversity, Inclusion and Equity Task Force.

The purpose of the 15-member committee “is to develop and promote strategies and best practices within the realms of all diversity within the school community,’’ according to the wording of the call for members. “The ultimate goal is to have a more inclusive community,’’ the statement reads.

The task force will include faculty, staff, students and community members, the district reported.

Superintendent of Schools Carolyn Lyons called for the task force formation after citing  a recent “uptick’’ in the use of racial slurs in the school community during a discussion at the Feb. 2 School Committee meeting.

“There’s no place for words of hate in our school community,’’ Lyons said at that meeting.“Not in our classrooms, not in our hallways, not on our school grounds, not on our playing fields, not in our theaters.’’

The task force will focus on curriculum instruction and materials; facilities; hiring practices; opportunity for learning and procedure and policies

Membership “will reflect the diversity of the Middleborough Public Schools,’’ the district reported. Those serving on the task force will “represent the many perspectives of the diverse identities in the Middleborough Public Schools,’’ according to the district.

Members will include the superintendent; three Middleboro Public School administrators; three school employees; three current students; three current legal guardians, with one each from the elementary, middle and high school levels; and two community stakeholders.

Because membership is limited, applications are being accepted for the task force.
