March events are music to bagpipers’ ears

Mar 21, 2023
MIDDLEBORO — Local bagpipe band, Old Colony Highlanders, is busy making music. The month of March is the most active month of the year for bagpipe bands, as St. Patrick’s Day celebrations occur throughout the month.

Old Colony Highlanders conducted a pub crawl on St. Patrick’s Day that commenced in Middleboro, headed ast through Carver and Plymouth and traveled up the South Shore through Kingston and Pembroke, ending in Marshfield. In addition to the pub crawl, the band performed at the Patriot Place Irish Festival on March 11 and marched in the Abington St. Patrick’s Parade on March 19.

The band enjoys celebrating the season with the community and events such as these pub crawls are fundraisers for the band and help with costs associated with instruments, uniforms, travel and other expenses. Old Colony Highlanders is a non-profit organization dedicated to teaching and performing the Celtic art of bagpiping and pipe band drumming alive in this region. Donations to support Old Colony Highlanders can be made through the band's website, www.OldColonyHighlanders.org.

The band offers lessons in bagpiping and drumming at no profit to the band to those wishing to play with the band. Private lessons are also available. Drums are provided to band drummers at no charge. The band always welcomes new members. The band practices in Lakeville.
