Making spirits light: Battis Field illuminated for holiday attraction

Dec 10, 2022

MIDDLEBORO — Visitors had half a million reasons to feel a little lighter this holiday season.

That was the approximate number of lights that twinkled when the Middleboro Parks Department and Middleboro Tourism Committee kicked off its first Holiday Lights at the Park: A Park and Walk Light Show Friday, Dec. 9 at Battis Field.

The show will continue Dec. 11, 16, 17 and 18 from 5 to 8:30 p.m. at the field.

“It’s great to bring an event like this to the community for families to enjoy,’’ said Fran Cass, head of the Parks Department chairman. “The feedback from everyone has been very positive.’’

Visitors strolled through lights of varying colors and sizes, along with displays of inflatables reflecting a number of themes, including Charlie Brown, snowmen, gingerbread characters and various Grinches and the denizens of Whooville. Even the pole lights were illuminated to resemble candy canes.

Santa sat at center stage in the middle of the field, while volunteers sold hot chocolate and other refreshments.

Although the skies were clear Friday night, snow fell on visitors, thanks to an automated machine that allowed children to run and play in the fun stuff.

Nathan Demers, chair of the Middleboro Tourism Committee and a member of the select board, thanked the volunteers who gave their time to plan and stage the event.

“We’re so fortunate to have a contingent of volunteers on the Parks Department and Tourism Committee that are committed to bringing family-oriented events to our town. Without them, Middleboro Police and Middleboro Gas and Electric, this event wouldn’t be possible.’’
