Learn about coding and robots during vacation week at Middleboro Library

MIDDLEBORO — With school vacation week Feb. 20-24, the Middleboro Public Library is hosting a series of events to keep youngsters entertained and enlightened.

Buildwave Hands-On Building Game will take place at 4 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 21. 

Buildwave is a creative building program that feels like a video game. During the workshop, students create with more than a dozen different building materials, including Lego, PlusPlus, and custom-made Buildwave materials. 

The workshop is structured like a video game, with an audiovisual set-up featuring animations and music that guides students through the different building waves. The workshop is aimed at building creative confidence, improving collaboration skills and encountering engineering and design fundamentals in a memorable context.

The program is for students in grades K-6. Space is limited so register by calling 508-946-2470 or visiting the library. 

Robots on the Run for Teens and Tweens will take place from 1 to 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 22 for ages 10 and older.

Run by the Rhode Island Computer Museum, the workshop aims to explain basic coding and instructions on how to command a simple robot. Participants will learn programmable electronics, instructions on how to make motors run and sounds, among other lessons.

Youngsters will also learn about interactive software and will create sample robot code. The program ends with Robot Wars, including breaking balloons attached to robots.

Registration is required so sign up by calling 508-946-2470. The presentation is part of the ongoing traveling exhibits by the Rhode Island Computer Museum and is part of the museum’s community outreach program.

Dashbots with FrankenSTEAM will be offered Thursday, Feb. 23 at 10:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. 

This is a chance to increase STEM skills with Dash Robots and Tony Ghelfi from FrankenS.T.E.A.M. Robotics and Coding. Participants can help Dash solve a mystery and play soccer and shoot baskets with a robot.

This program is open to children ages 8 to 12. Call the library to sign up at 508-946-2470. Sign-up is limited to one session per person.
