Lakeville woman charged with trying to cash in stolen $3 million Lottery ticket
LAKEVILLE — A Lakeville woman has been indicted on charges she tried to steal and cash in a $3 million lottery ticket that was purchased by a customer at the former Savas Liquors in Lakeville, where she worked as a clerk.
Carly Nunes, 23, was charged with one count of larceny from a building, attempted larceny, presenting a false claim and witness intimidation, Plymouth County District Attorney Timothy J. Cruz said.
According to Cruz, a man entered Savas Liquors on Bedford Street in Lakeville on Jan. 17 and purchased two Mass State Lottery Quick Picks, including the multiplier, for the Mega Millions drawing, and two for the Mass Cash drawing. Savas Liquors is no longer operational under that name.
The man inadvertently left his tickets behind. That night, the man’s Mass Millions ticket numbers were announced as the winning numbers, earning him a $3 million prize. After leaving the store and realizing he no longer had his tickets, the man briefly searched for them but concluded that they were lost, Cruz said.
Another person came in about 45 minutes later to buy five lottery tickets, which Nunes printed and handed to the person, Cruz said. That person realized there were two extra tickets, and gave the two belonging to the victim back to Nunes, Cruz said.
“Nunes took the tickets and said they must have belonged to ‘him,’ meaning the victim,” according to the district attorney.
On Jan. 19, Joseph Reddem, Nunes’ co-worker at Savas, drove her and her boyfriend to the lottery headquarters in Dorchester to redeem the $3 million ticket, according to Cruz, which at that time was torn and appeared to be burned.
A state Lottery customer service representative scanned the ticket and determined the worth to be three million dollars, Cruz said.
Nunes and Reddem are later seen on Lottery surveillance video arguing in the lobby. Reddem allegedly made demands of the jackpot and Nunes informed Reddem that she would “only pay him $200,000,’’ Cruz said.
State Lottery officials overheard the argument, which, along with the state of the ticket, led lottery investigators to interview Nunes. She claimed she purchased the ticket at the end of her shift on Jan. 17.
Lottery officials and State Police investigate and surveillance video confirmed that the male victim, not Nunes, purchased the winning ticket, Cruz said.
The true owner of the ticket was found on Feb. 13. He will receive his $3 million prize from the Massachusetts State Lottery.
Reddem, 32, of Manchester N.H. was indicted on one charge of attempted extortion.
