Lakeville town accountant to resign

Sep 27, 2024

LAKEVILLE — Lakeville Town Accountant Todd Hassett has announced he will be resigning in December.

Lakeville Select Board Chair Lorraine Carboni said she “reluctantly” agreed to accept his resignation letter during the Select Board’s meeting on Tuesday, Sept. 24.

Hassett’s last day will be December 14, which is when his current three-year contract with the town ends.

He recalled in his letter that his time in Lakeville began as a 90 day interim stint and turned into a nine year job.

Hassett described his time with the town as “challenging,” “rewarding” and “at times quite interesting.”

Select board members concurred that Hassett will be greatly missed.

“Todd works at a stellar level,” said Select Board Vice Chair Lia Fabian. “I’ve learned so much from him.” She noted the burden that the tax assessment error placed on the accounting office and other town departments.

Board member Brian Day said receiving Hassett’s resignation letter was “a gut punch.” Day recalled how his visits to the town’s accounting office under Hassett’s supervision was like “visiting extended family.”

“They welcome you and always answer any questions,” he said.

“He’s been a wonderful person to work with,” noted Carboni.

The board deliberated whether the next step should be hiring an in-house accountant or awarding a contract to an outside firm.

Interim Town Administrator Robert Nunes urged the board to pursue hiring an in-house accountant.

The Board agreed to work on a job description for the possible hiring of a town accountant and review it at its meeting on Monday, Oct. 7.
