Lakeville Senior Center hosting an array of activities

LAKEVILLE __ The Council on Aging is marching into Spring with a wide selection of events and important announcements.

On Tuesday, March 14 the COA is celebrating St. Patrick’s Day at Loon Pond Lodge with a sit-down meal and entertainment by the Hollybriar Bagpipers. Their performance is funded by the Lakeville Cultural Council. The food will consist of salad, corn beef & cabbage, and desert supplied by the Boston Tavern. Doors open at 11:45 a.m. and sign-ups are required. Dress in festive Irish Spirit to be considered to win a door prize.

The Council on Aging Outreach Services are available to assist seniors and their families on Mondays and Tuesdays from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. by appointment only. Some services available for referrals are fuel assistance, food bank, Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, caregiver services and housing. The Lakeville select board will be here on Friday, March 10 from 10 to 11 a.m.

State Rep. Norman Orrall will be here on Monday, March 13 from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. 

State Senator Michael Rodrigues will be hosting office hours at the COA on Wednesday March 22 from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Feel free to stop by with questions or concerns. 

Attorney Adam Bond of Middleboro is offering free 20-minute consultations for Lakeville seniors by appointment only Tuesday, March 28 from 10 to 11 a.m.

Join the Friday morning cafés from 9 to 11 a.m. Coffee, tea, juices, water, and plenty of snacks will be provided. No sign-ups are necessary and this is not restricted to Lakeville seniors. 

Brain Builders is back with a two-part series at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, March 7, and on Tuesday, March 28. This is a community-based experience that enables attendees to enhance their brain fitness. 

The cosmetology students of Old Colony will offer free manicures on Thursday, March 16, from 9:30 to 11 a.m. Students are offering a hand and arm massage as well as a polish application. Tips are welcome and will go towards the cost of their licenses. Sign-ups are required. Call the office at 508-947-7224 and press 1 to schedule. 

Paint Day with Amy will take place on Wednesday, March 15 at 10 a.m. There will be step-by-step instructions to paint “Spring Flowers”. No experience is needed. Sign up at 508-947-7224 and press 1. The cost is $20 per person, including all supplies and instruction. 

Two new movies will be showing for the month of March. “I am Sam” will be playing on Tuesday, March 23 at 10 a.m. “Hidden Figures” will be playing on Thursday, March 23 at 1 p.m. 

There will be no bingo in March. The next bingo and Lunch will be held on Tuesday, April 18 at noon. Sign-ups for the April Bingo will begin on April 1 The cost is $5 and must be paid at the time you sign up. 

Create clay cacti and succulent sculptures with Pop up Art School on Tuesday, April 4 at 1 p.m. The school will show you how to make the pots, the cacti, and succulents, and how to finish them with acrylic paint. Sign-ups are available now at a cost of $5. Call 508-947-7224 and press 1. 

A grief and loss support group is meeting at 1 p.m. March 9, April 13, and May 11. The group  offers a different quality of support and connection that comes from being with people who have also experienced some type of loss. Sign-ups are appreciated, walk-ins always welcome. Registered dietitian Ashley Whewell is holding a Nutrition Simplifies class on March 17, at 1 p.m. She will be covering the ins and outs of managing blood pressure with proper nutrition, as well as discussing which foods can help lower your risk of heart disease and how to incorporate them into your current diet. The Book Club will be hosting their next meeting on March 21 from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. They will be reading Elin Hilderbrand’s “The Perfect Couple”. The books are now available at the Lakeville Library. Light refreshments will be served. 

Congregate Meals are available on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 11:30 a.m. March 2, 7, 9, 16, 21, 23, 28, and 30. Meals are prepared by Old Colony Elder Services. Payment is not required, although a suggested donation of $2.50 may be left. Call to sign up at 508-947-7224. 

Men are encouraged to get together and talk with other guys with the same interests and hobbies by attending the new Men’s Social Club. Coffee and sweet treats are available. The group meets every Thursday from 10 a.m. to noon.  Call 508-947-7224 and press 1 to sign up or just show up.

The center is forming a walking group to explore local trails. There is also an opportunity to form a bowling group with 10-pin bowlers. If there’s any interest, pricing and available times at the New Bedford and Raynham alleys will be discussed.
