Lakeville Select Board Expansion on Town Meeting agenda

Oct 11, 2022

LAKEVILLE — The Lakeville Select Board would expand from its current three members to five if a citizens petition passes at the Nov. 14 Special Town Meeting.

About 155 residents signed a petition seeking a vote on the change.

Supporters said the change would help provide additional viewpoints on the board.

Expanding the board, town resident and petition signer Steve Howe said, would better represent the views of the town, spread out the responsibilities of Select Board members, and provide more people for residents to contact.

“The town is growing and lots of projects need to get done,” Howe said. “It’s too much work for three people.”

Lakeville resident and petition signer Brynna Donahue said a five-member board would require a three-vote majority to make decisions, instead of two votes with the current three-member board.

Donahue added that more people are willing to run for Select Board positions compared to past years, making now an ideal time to expand.

“There weren’t a lot of people who wanted to do the job,” Donahue said.

Current select board member Lorraine Carboni said she does not have “any reservations’’ about the change.

Carboni added that expanding the Select Board would be “advantageous” to the town as it grows, allowing more citizens to become involved in the decision-making processes.

If the article passes, the community will elect three Select Board members at the first election once the article is approved by state legislature.

The recipient of the highest number of votes will serve a three-year term, the recipient of the second-highest vote count will serve a two-year term, and the recipient of the third-highest vote count will serve a one-year term.

After the initial election to expand the Select Board, one member will be elected each year and all members going forward will serve three-year terms. There are no term limits for Select Board members.

Select Board Member Richard LaCamera’s term is the next to expire, coming to an end in 2023.
