Lakeville Council on Aging to feature a range of May activities
LAKEVILLE -- Check out a sampling of the varied events hosted in May by The Lakeville Council on Aging, 1 Dear Crossing.
Celebrating Guys & Gals: Tickets are now on sale for Tuesday, June 2 at noon. Older events are invited to a country-themed barbecue at the Loon Pond Lodge in Lakeville. Secure tickets while supplies last for $5 apiece. Country Wild Heart, a five-piece country band, will provide live music for entertainment and dancing.
The FBI and Lakeville Police Department present a program on elder fraud at 1 p.m. Tuesday, May 12. This training class will outline the most common types of fraud, such as Grandparent scams, how to spot these types of fraud, and how to report them to the proper authorities. Aging and Depression, An Interactive Presentation will be offered at 11 a.m. Friday, May 15.
The Lakeville Council on Aging’s social worker and representatives from Old Colony Elder Services will host the presentation, which includes a lively game show style activity to test participants’ knowledge and learn practical strategies for staying emotionally well. Rita Parisi from Waterfall Productions will present “I am Zelda,” a one-act play at 1 p.m. Tuesday, May 19. This original storytelling sheds light on the mythical life of Zelda Sayre Fitzgerald, muse and wife of F. Scott Fitzgerald, author of “The Great Gatsby.’’
Sign-ups are required; call 508-947-7224. This is a free event made possible by a grant provided by the Lakeville Cultural Council, a local agency that is supported by the Mass Cultural Council.
Therapy Gardens will host an indoor gardening workshop at 1 p.m. Thursday, May 21.
Participants will learn about the properties of popular flowers and herbs, both edible and ornamental, and then plant their own starter garden. Participants will take away a small seed starter kit and their choice of a variety of seeds (limited by availability and season).
The cost is $7 per person due at sign-up at the Council on Aging.
Old Colony sophomore cosmetology students will offer free manicures from 9:30 a.m. to noon Thursday, May 28.
These traditional manicure sessions take about half an hour and include hand and arm massage and an application of nail polish.
Sessions are free but tips are welcome and will go towards the cost of student licenses.

All local veterans are invited to Friday Café from 9 to 11 a.m. May 29.
This gathering will be hosted by Lakeville Select Board member and Veterans Services Liaison Christopher Plonka and is an opportunity to share ideas, discuss issues and meet other local veterans. Call 508-947-7224 to sign up; walk-ins are welcome.
Enjoy a movie with friends. Admission is $2 and includes light refreshments.
“Flipped” (PG) will be shown at 1 p.m. Monday, May 11. The 2010 Rob Reiner-directed heart-warming film tells the story of two young neighbors growing up in 1957.
In honor of the 40th anniversary, “Stand By Me” (R) will be aired at 1 p.m. Monday, May 18.
This 1986 Rob Reiner classic tells the story of four young boys as they set off on an adventure to solve a local tragedy, learning about themselves, the meaning of friendship, and standing up for what is right. Call 508-947-7224 to sign up for one or both showings.
To welcome the nicer spring weather, the COA Walking Group invites new members to join this active group of older adults two Wednesday mornings a month to explore outdoor locales. The next meet-up will be Wednesday, May 20.

Instructor Jennifer Shallcross of Chalk Talk Technology hosts Digital Literacy for older adults. A few spots remain for the June session.
All classes will be taught using new tablets, which will be loaned out for students to practice skills at home between classes. Topics include basic tablet use, internet browsing safety, email communication, using Zoom for video calls and other subjects. The fee of $10 per person includes four weekly class sessions.
