Lakeville businessman honored with VFW citizenship award
MIDDLEBORO — William Seckinger, owner of Muckeys Liquor Store in Lakeville, recently received the citizenship award, one of the most prestigious American Legion honors, from the Department of Massachusetts, District 10, American Legion Simeon L Nickerson Post 64
Post 64 Commander Bob Burke spoke on behalf of the American Legion Americanism Committee. He described Seckinger as a hidden asset for his community and the American Legion.
Seckinger is involved in or at least contributes funds or gift baskets to many charities in both Middleboro and Lakeville.
He and his wife Cindy know what it is like to be in the military, Burke said, as both their fathers served for over 20 years.
Seckinger started helping with the American Legion many years ago with fund-raising efforts for Middleboro’s memorial park and comfort warriors’ projects.
After the park was completed, he also helped run the fund-raising event called the Taste of Middleboro. These funds are used at the park to pay maintenance fees as well as the water and electric bills.
He also became involved in raising funds for the Comfort Warriors Project. He hosted a cash bar and became part of the committee for a fund-raising event. He convinced a veterans-owned brewery to introduce, release and donate many cases of a new beer product at the event. The event was well-attended and successful.
Because of his and his staff’s commitment, a profit was made of almost $5,000, which Burke was able to present to the National Commander at the national convention that year.
