Lakeville brrr-aves the cold to take the plunge for Special Olympics

Mar 11, 2023

LAKEVILLE ___ With a mix of rain and snow falling, this was no day at the beach.

Participants might say it was even better, since this unseasonal romp in the surf led to more support for Special Olympics athletes

Community members braved the cold to run into Clear Pond Saturday, March 11 to participate in the town’s first Polar Plunge, which benefits Special Olympics Massachusetts.

Cindy Generazzo of Lakeville felt a special connection to the splashy activity. She works with individuals with special needs and supports the efforts of Special Olympics. The organization “gives students with special needs the chance to participate in sports and feel included,’’ she said.

She served as the team leader of the Frosted Flakes.

Renee Garbitt of Lakeville spoke enthusiastically of the plunge even as she shivered, wrapped in a towel, after taking the watery leap for the first time. “It’s a great way to get everybody together’’ to support the cause, she said.

The participants showed “good energy’’ despite the weather, said Stephanie Esposito, AVP of Development for Special Olympics Massachusetts.

“We’re so grateful for the Lakeville community,’’ she said, “for showing up and supporting Special Olympics.’’ She said she was “really, really excited’’ at the first-year haul of more than $16,000.

The event was hosted by the Lakeville Police Department and organized by Sgt. Erik McNeice.

“I’m very happy with the turnout,’’ he said.

He offered a one-word answer about whether the event will return to Lakeville for a second year.

“Absolutely.’’
