Lakeville to add civilian traffic employees
LAKEVILLE — Lakeville has agreed to hire six civilians to assist with traffic control during road construction and events.
The hires would offset the loss of six part-time and reserve officers, who didn’t meet minimum training requirements required by police reform regulations implemented during the last three years, Police Chief Matthew Perkins explained to Select Board members at their Aug. 26 meeting.
Detail officers to work traffic control have subsequently become “hard to find,’’ Perkins said. The department has at times relied on out-of-town officers to assist with traffic control, Perkins explained.
“This isn’t just a problem in Lakeville,’’ Perkins said, adding that other communities have created a similar civilian traffic program to address the situation.
These individuals would be paid by the construction companies or other organizations seeking traffic assistance, Perkins said.
They would not be dressed as police officers and would clearly be designated as traffic control, he added.
The chief noted that the department would maintain a “rotating list’’ of qualified individuals to assist with the training.
