Lady Lakers defeat Sachems in soccer matchup
MIDDLEBORO — After taking a decisive lead in the first half, the Lakers girls soccer team came out with a 3-0 victory at its match against Middleboro High School on Friday, Oct. 11.
The Lakers started off strong, scoring the first goal within the first ten minutes of the game. By the end of the second half, they were up two.
Apponequet continued to dominate at the beginning of the second half, securing a 3-0 lead against the Sachems.
Lakers coach Walter Seaburg said the team’s current winning streak was a product of finding the right formation and putting players in positions where they perform best.
Getting the group to work together as a team took some time, according to Seaburg, who noted “we had a few wild mares,” with a laugh.
The group’s strengths are its strong defensive core, strong midfield and consistent goal-keeping, said Seaburg.
The last matchup between the Lakers and Sachems ended with the Lakers defeating the Sachems 6-0. Considering the recent loss, Sachems coach Denis Cutler said this result was “better than the last game.”
Cutler said what hurt the team this time around was not fighting for the ball enough and not “marking” or blocking opponents around the goal during the first half.
Another disadvantage was the fact that the Sachem's top goal-scorer, Jessica Perry, was on the bench due to an ankle injury.
“Not having her hurts our attack a lot,” Cutler noted.
Still, Cutler was pleased with how the team rallied in the second half and didn’t let the Laker’s continue to score.
“Most of the second half I was really happy with the way we picked up our intensity and started competing harder for the ball,” he said.
Looking forward, he said, “there is definitely talent to work with. It’s a fun group. We just have to keep growing as a team.”
The priority right now for the Lakers is to continue improving and “maintaining where we’re at,” according to Seaburg.
