Ghost drive petrifies residents at Peirce Playground
MIDDLEBORO – Several minutes before the ghost drive officially started, cars were already lined up near Peirce Playground on Oct. 27 waiting for the event to begin.
Hope Keady said that she and her family decided to experience the ghost drive after seeing a sign for the event. “We saw the sign near the soccer field saying there’s going to be a spooky drive through,” Keady said.
Middleboro Parks Superintendent Fran Cass said that the event, which involves cars driving along a road while being scared by people in costumes as well as various Halloween themed objects, was popular with the community.
“Everyone loves it. Kids love it,” Cass said. The ghost drive is a “good, safe holiday event close to town,” he added.
Cass said that “somewhere around nineteen to twenty” volunteers were dressed up in costumes for this year's ghost drive.
One of the costumed volunteers, Brooke Main, was dressed up as a scarecrow. Scarecrows are “supposed to scare things off, so hopefully we do that,” she said.
Another volunteer, Shon Hurley, was dressed up as a clown. “I wanted to volunteer to help out, and they said ‘if you could dress as a clown that’s great,’” he said. “I’ve actually been pennywise in the past, so I already had the costume ready to go.”
Hurley said that clowns are scary because “they seem so nice in the beginning, and once you get close, their scary teeth come out and they might attack you.”
The goal for the evening was to “scare and smile,” Hurley said.
