George Alexander Andrade, Sr., 94
Sep 16, 2024
George Alexander Andrade, Sr. of Middleboro died peacefully surrounded by his loving and devoted family on September 11, 2024. He was 94.
George was born on February 28, 1930 in East Providence, Rhode Island. He attended schools in Carver and Plymouth. A veteran, he served in the United States Army during the Korean War (1951-1953). Initially, George was stationed in Camp Chaffee (Arkansas). He completed his tour of duty in Fairbanks, Alaska and received an Honorable Discharge. As a young man, George worked on the family cranberry bogs in Carver. Later, he went to work at the Stiles and Hart Brickyard in Bridgewater. It was there he met his future father-in-law, eventually meeting Vicincia in 1949. They were married in 1951. Returning from service duty, George returned to the brickyard to live in the company apartments alongside family and friends. In later years, he maintained friendships with many of these people. In 1959, George and Vicincia moved to Middleboro, purchasing a home where they raised their five children. A short time later, George joined Mass Laborers' Union, Local 138. Over the next 30 years he worked for many contractors until he retired from the union in 1992.
George was a self taught musician and played the tenor sax. He was a very popular saxophone player. He was well known from New Bedford to Cape Cod and Providence, playing mostly Cape Verdean, Jazz, and Blues music. He played in numerous bands and nightclubs throughout the years and eventually formed the George Andrade Band from which he retired in the early 2000's. Later, he enjoyed playing the sax with Father Richard Crowley and the Sacred Heart Band.
George joined the Middleboro Kiwanis because it was an organization for and about children. He respected that priority. George was a member of the Men's Prayer Group and attended many retreats over the years. George also did many Walks for Hunger & MS walks. He loved to work outdoors in his yard and making repairs to his home. He treasured the time spent with his family. He especially enjoyed “all the things he had accumulated at his home in the 65 years” that he had no need for, with plans for a big yard sale!
George was a devout Catholic. A communicant of Saint Isidore Parish (Sacred Heart Church) he was a Eucharistic Minister, a Lector and taught CCD for 10 years. George was a kind and loving man who brought Communion to those in nursing homes and at home that were unable to attend Mass. He would gladly drive people to their medical appointments if they were unable to drive themselves.
Knowing George meant you knew a sharp dressed man who loved to play the sax and whose favorite color was purple!
George was pre-deceased by his wife, Vicincia S. Andrade, his brother Kenneth Pimental and his mother, Alice Pimental.
