Garage a total loss after fire on Oak Street in Middleboro
MIDDLEBORO — A smoky fire destroyed a detached garage at 107 Oak St. Wednesday, Jan. 8, Middleboro Fire Chief Owen Thompson reported.
The four-bay garage was unoccupied at the time of the fire, and no injuries were reported. The owner of the nearby single-family home noticed smoke coming from the garage and called 911.
Heavy smoke billowed through multiple bays of the garage and the fire extended through the roof of the building, Thompson said.
The stability of the building's towering chimney was a safety concern, the chief noted, but firefighters determined it was sturdy enough to continue safely battling the blaze.
Because of high winds at the time of the fire, embers from the garage drifted, lighting several spots of grass and bushes that had to be extinguished by firefighters.
The Lakeville Fire Department provided mutual aid at the scene. The Raynham Fire Department provided station coverage. Rehab services were provided on scene by the Department of Fire Services Special Operations, Coastal Ambulance, and the Providence Canteen.
The fire remains under investigation by the Middleboro Fire Department and State Police assigned to the State Fire Marshal’s Office.
