Fishing derby June 2 aims to get youths hooked on the sport

May 4, 2024

MIDDLEBORO — The Wankinquoah Rod and Gun Club of Middleboro will host its annual Tihonet Pond Fishing Derby on June 2 at Tihonet Pond in Wareham.

The derby has been held for more than 50 years. A.D. Makepeace donated their property and partnered with the club to support this year’s event, which will take place rain or shine.

Proceeds from the derby, which is held on the Massachusetts Free Fishing weekend, are used to support The Wankinquoah Rod and Gun Club Junior Associates Program.

The mission of the program is to foster a love and respect for the outdoors, teach the next generation the skills necessary to become responsible and ethical sportsmen and to provide youth with opportunities to grow as leaders. Junior Associates membership is based on conservation, sportsmanship, and integrity.

With a focus on education and fun, the group participates in goal setting, fundraising, local and state conservation, and determining the monthly calendar events .

The group also supports a Juniors Associate Friday NRA Rifle Program, Archery Family Friday Nights and USA Archery Courses offered to youth.

Wankinquoah Junior Associates membership is open to all youth ages 9 to 18.
