Fired up Santa greets crowd on engine in Lakeville
LAKEVILLE — The approaching cacophony of sirens and horns initially signaled an oncoming emergency, a warning that first responders were en route to a serious call and needed room to maneuver.
But as the vehicles approached, a careful ear could detect that the horns were not sounding as a warning but in a friendly, seasonally familiar pattern.
Jingle bells, jingle bells, jingle all the way.
Yes, the Santa ride had arrived, spreading cheer and good humor throughout Lakeville Sunday, Dec. 15.
In an annual tradition, the Lakeville Fire Department and other town departments rode fire trucks and various vehicles to bring Santa and friends throughout town.
Children lined portions of the townwide route to wave to the big red guy and his crew. The entourage did not stop but waved to waiting fans and even threw the occasional candy cane.
For participants, the ride brings comfort and joy, Fire Chief Michael O’Brien said.
"Much of what first responders deal with can be pretty negative,’’ he said. “Being able to brighten people's day is such a great feeling for all of us. It really recharges our batteries."
He thanked “everyone who lined the roads today’’ and the town employees who “gave their time to the event.’’
