Fall ends with Apponequet, Middleboro athletic achievements

Nov 5, 2023

Apponequet and Middleboro High School both accomplished a lot in the world of athletics this fall, the two schools’ athletic directors said.

Multiple teams from both schools made it to the playoffs. The Apponequet varsity girls soccer team and girls cross country team both won the South Coast Conference championship this season.

“The girls won the South Coast Conference championship for the first time since 1989. The boys came in second,” Apponequet Athletic Director James Cabucio said. Both cross country teams will compete in the MIAA divisional meet this Saturday, Nov. 11 Cabucio added.

Middleboro’s boys and girls cross country teams also made it to the MIAA divisional meet, Middleboro Athletic Director Ryan Sylvia said. “The girls team finished second in the conference, and the boys team finished third. They’re always competitive.”

Middleboro’s field hockey team qualified for the playoffs this season. The Sachems then lost their first playoff game this season 2-0 to Hopkinton.

Silvia said the field hockey team kept the score close for the majority of the game. “It was 0-0 going into the fourth quarter,” he said.

Another Middleboro team that achieved postseason success was the Sachem’s cheer team, Silvia said.

“The cheer team just had their league competition Wednesday, and [they] qualified for regionals,” he explained. “So they’ll compete in Franklin for the regional meet.”

Apponequet’s volleyball team also made the playoffs, but lost 3-0 to Newburyport.

The two school’s football teams both made the playoffs. Middleboro lost to Marblehead 12-21, and Apponequet lost their playoff game against Dedham 30-6.

The “football team did a fantastic job,” Cabucio said. “They beat previously unbeaten Fairhaven last Friday to get into the playoffs. Unfortunately they lost last night, but they played a good team against Dedham.”
