From crabs to cormorants, program teaches about sea creatures

Jul 2, 2023

MIDDLEBORO — The Middleboro Public Library will host a two-part program series called “New England Summertime Treasures” with science educator Judy Macioci July 12 and 19.

The first program, Beach Creatures, will take place at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, July 12.

Those attending will learn about different kinds of mollusks, crabs, and sea worms, discover what’s underfoot on area beaches and how these creatures co-exist with all those sunbathers.

Shells and other items will be on display.

The second program, Shorebirds, will take place at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, July 19.

Summer is a great time to go bird watching, especially at the beach and rivers. Learn about the different kinds of birds that make their homes at the shore, especially piping plovers, cormorants, and osprey.  Discover what they eat, how they survive and how to identify them.

Both programs are geared toward adults but open to all ages.

Macioci is a retired science educator and currently a teacher naturalist who presents natural history programs throughout the area. Using a variety of hands-on activities and a display of nature items, she creates an atmosphere of fun, learning and imagination.

Registration is requested but not required. Call (508) 946-2470 or email Reference/Adult Services Librarian Libby Fox at lfox@sailsinc.org.

Friends of the Middleborough Public Library funded this program series.
