Change in formation keeps Lakers’ unbeaten record alive
LAKEVILLE — Even when the Apponequet High School’s girls varsity soccer team was down by a point against Somerset Berkley, Head Coach Walter Seaberg said he never doubted his team’s ability to win the game.
The Lakers got on the scoreboard first, thanks to a goal from Reagan Flynn with an assist from CC Leavrault. But the Lakers also conceded two penalties to the Somerset Berkley Raiders in the first half during their game on Wednesday, Oct.11.
The first Raider penalty kick, taken before Flynn’s goal, hit the crossbar. But the second penalty kick tied the game at 1-1.
“Fouls happen,” Seaberg explained. “Just be aware and don’t do it.”
The Raiders scored again, leaving the Lakers in a deficit. Then, Seaberg decided to change the Laker’s formation.
“I actually switched the formation and then the girls were able to start stringing some passes together,” Seaberg said. “Somerset was covering the middle well.”
He explained that he changed the team’s formation to add additional players in the midfield. “There weren’t just two people in the middle,” Seaberg said, so with the new formation the team “could pass around and get it set up and push it back out to the wings.”
After the formation change, the Lakers scored four unanswered goals, ending the game at 5-2. The Lakers are unbeaten this season, and the win against Somerset Berkley increases their record to 12-0-1.
CC Leavrault scored the team’s second goal off of an assist from Morgan Hayward, and Reagan Flynn scored her second of the game from a corner taken by captain Jaida Beaulieu.
Emma Seaberg got the team’s fourth goal and Emily Bodwell capped the scoring off thanks to an assist from Annie Smith.
“Sometimes [the Lakers] get away from our play, and once we get that reestablished, then we’re off and running,” Seaberg explained.
“It’s all the girls. I just give them the tools and they’re implementing it. They’re doing fantastic. I just say I’m their biggest cheerleader.”
