Carolyn E. Gravelin, 87

Carolyn E. Gravelin (AKA "Dag" or "Sarg") passed away peacefully on June 30, 2025 following a brief stay in Oakhill Healthcare. She was 87.
 
Carolyn was a graduate of the Sargent College at Boston University. She loved her time there and made lifelong friends. She continued with the Sargent spirit her entire life. Carolyn was a physical education teacher and coached girls sports teams in Middleboro, Lakeville, Waltham and West Bridgewater . She was active in the Lakeville girls softball program for over 10 years and served as the first President of the Girls Intertown League. She was an avid bowler into her 80’s and was league secretary for over 25 years. She was actively involved in the Middleboro VFW Auxiliary, which supports veterans, service members and their families through various programs and initiatives. She was the District 12 president multiple times and was the state president in 2000-2001. She strongly believed in supporting veterans.
 
She had lifelong friendships with her “sisters” of the VFW auxiliary. She was a volunteer at the Brockton VA and Davis Park VA, assisting with various events for the patients. She was a supporter of the Muscular Dystrophy Foundation after her brother was diagnosed with ALS and organized many events to raise money for the cause. She started as a medical volunteer driver at the council on aging in 1997 and drove over 100,000 volunteer miles bringing seniors and disabled people to appointments in Boston and surrounding areas. She served on the Lakeville and Middleboro Commission on Disabilities. She was a strong believer in supporting the rights and needs of those with disabilities. She worked with her mother at Thelma's Restaurant, Bakery and Catering from 1971 until 1984. She became the caregiver for her handicapped brother in 1990 after the passing of her mother. She dedicated herself to his care and well being until his passing in 2019.
 
She was very involved with her family and was a big part of all her nieces and nephews lives. She was pre-deceased by her parents, Thelma E. (Ray) Gravelin and Peter D. Gravelin, her brothers Peter, Jimmy and Emerson Gravelin, her sisters Delia McLucas Cote Burpee and Mary Pittsley. She was the beloved and cherished aunt of Eleanor Kirkland, Betsy Cass, Barbara Gould, Larry McLucas, Carolyn Fish, Dee Robbins and Kim Gravelin. Carolyn was the beloved and cherished Godmother and aunt to Sharon Pittsley.  She was pre-deceased by her niece June Hall and nephews Walter Pittsley, Jr., Douglas Pittsley and Mitch Cote. She was the great, great-great and great-great-great aunt to many nieces and nephews as well.  She was an intelligent, independent, strong woman who spoke her mind. She was a loving woman who gave of herself and her time for others.....She will be greatly missed.
 
Visiting hours on July 8, 2025 (Tuesday) from 4 until 6 PM in the O'Neill Funeral Home, 59 Peirce Street (corner of School Street) Middleboro.
 
Funeral services on July 9, 2025 (Wednesday) at 10 AM in the funeral home.  Interment will follow in Saint Mary Cemetery.
 
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Middleborough Veterans Service Office Emergency Relief Donations Account, 20 Center Street (Third Floor) Middleborough, MA 02346. Checks should be made payable to the Town of Middleborough.
