Camp Yomechas brings Halloween to the campground
MIDDLEBORO – The cold rainy weather didn’t stop treaters from collecting sweets during the Camp Yomechas trunk or treat on Sunday, Oct. 29.
From Jurassic Park to Pokémon themed, trunks at the camp were decorated and ready to greet trick-or-treaters.
It was camp counselors Abby Delk and Jonathan Redder first time participating in the trunk or treat.
Their Pokémon themed trunk brought smiles to many faces.
“I originally really wanted to scare children but [Delk] said no,” said Redder with a laugh. “But handing out candy is always fun.”
Although the Mac family’s trunk has seen multiple themes over the years including Mario and Paw Patrol, this year their setup was inspired by their favorite coffee shop – Dunkin’ Donuts.
“We do daily Dunkin’ runs,” said Rachel Mac. “We are Munchkin and donut aficionados.”
10-year-old Kensington Mac said her favorite treat from Dunkin’ Donuts is the spider donut, a seasonal Halloween menu item.
“It is orange frosted with a Munchkin in the middle,” said Kensington who explained that the sweet treat resembles a scary spider.
Munchkins weren’t the only treat offered at the event. Many treaters left with bags filled with Skittles, Twix bars, bubble gum and more.
According to YMCA Executive Director Julie Kennedy, although the rain made for a smaller event then in years past, her team was still excited to put participate.
“We had about 90 families pre-registered and most of them have shown up,” she said. “We still want to be here and do things for the community so we still went with it.”
Camp and Program Director Morgan Pritchard said that the trunk or treat started during Covid and has gained popularity over the years.
“We try to do a lot down here in the off-season too because some people only think of us [as being active during] just the summer,” she said. “But we have a lot of events down here during the school year too.”
