Berry fun day in berry good weather at Crantoberfest

MIDDLEBORO — A berry good time was had by all at Middleboro’s 9th Annual Crantoberfest.

While people from Middleboro and beyond gathered to celebrate the fall cranberry harvest in front of Middleboro Town Hall on Saturday, Oct. 15, the sunny weather reminded people of summer.

“This is one of the pillar events of our community,” said Middleboro Tourism Committee Chair and Select Board Vice-Chair Nathan Demers. “People come from all over and our social media account is buzzing whenever we post this event. Personally, I love doing it.”

The event included three judged events: the cranberry bakeoff, the crowning of Miss Crantoberfest, and a costume contest.

Judges included Mac Sprague of Mac Roofing, Middleboro Ghost Tour Leader Christy Parrish, new Town Manager Jay McGrail, and State Senate Candidate Maria Collins.

“It’s awesome to be here,” McGrail said. “I had the opportunity to eat a bunch of really good food, all the entries were phenomenal, and everyone’s been really pleasant and nice to talk to.”

Molly Quinn, age 12, won the Miss Crantoberfest contest thanks to her cranberry knowledge. She earned a tiara and a sash with ‘Miss Crantoberfest 2022’ embroidered on it. She will represent Middleboro Tourism at events throughout the year.

Judges awarded 12 prizes during the costume contest. Costume highlights included a homemade snow monster costume on 7-year-old Bradley Wakefield, a hedgehog costume on 17-month-old Lily McKeen, and best costume winner Tiffany Green, age 9, who dressed as a slice of pizza.

Sven Bohn, who runs Haus of Cakes, won the bakeoff. He set up a vendor tent to sell his coffee cakes, which included an orange, cranberry, and walnut variety.

“It feels amazing to win,” Bohn said. “It’s the first time I’ve ever entered a bakeoff, so I’m very excited.”

In addition to Haus of Cakes, vendors included Handmade by Stephanie, the veteran-made and veteran-owned Rogue Leather, and Mémère’s Cupboard, an artisan jam and jelly business that sells root beer-flavored and Mountain Dew-flavored jam.

“I can tell there’s great energy and excitement in the town,” McGrail said.
