Arthur Gifford Shaw, Jr., 97
Mar 18, 2025
PLYMOUTH - Arthur Gifford Shaw, Jr., age 97, of Plymouth, formerly of Middleborough, died peacefully at the Hannah B.G. Shaw Home for the Aged in Middleborough, on Thursday, March 13, 2025.
Arthur (Artie to his friends) was born in Carver on December 18, 1927 to Arthur Shaw and Miriam (Stappen). He graduated from Carver Elementary Schools, then Plymouth High School, Class of 1946, where he was a star football player. Arthur entered the US Army in 1946 during WWII and served in the 82nd Airborne Division as a paratrooper. He tried to enlist the previous year, but was told to go back and finish his high school degree first. Arthur served in Germany with the Army of Occupation.
He was predeceased by his adoring wife, Jane (Wood) Shaw with whom he spent 68 years in a loving marriage. He was also predeceased by his parents and his three sisters.
Arthur is survived by two sons, Arthur Shaw, III of Florida, Ronald Shaw of Plymouth; his grandson, Adam Shaw (& Angela King-Shaw) of California; and a great-grandson, Elliot Shaw. He is also survived by his right hand, Michael “Frenchy” DeLongchamps, table 1 at the American Legion Post 40, and way too many friends to begin to count.
Arthur worked at and later owned the family business, Shaw’s Inc., an appliance, furniture and floor covering store in Middleborough. He was a Descendant of the Mayflower Society, a member of the Freemasons, the VFW, the DAV and the American Legion. In his latter years, he was able to participate in an Honor Flight of New England trip to Washington, DC, as well as travel to France in 2024 for the 80th anniversary of Normandy, where he made multiple new friends. Artie touched the lives of everyone he came in contact with; his generosity and love of sharing with family and friends were exceptional. If you enjoy the bench and bike rack located at the start of the seaside trail from Nelson Park, or the flowers and trees along the trail, Artie was the one responsible for donating them, along with many American flags located across the Town of Plymouth. He very rarely had an unkind word to say about anyone, and had a strong, if quiet, personal faith in God.
There will be NO visiting hours.
Family and friends are welcome to the Graveside Service celebrating Artie's life to be held at the Chiltonville Cemetery, off of River Street, Plymouth, on Monday, March 24, 2025 at 11:00 AM.
A gathering will follow at the American Legion Post 40, 199 Federal Furnace Road, Plymouth.
In lieu of flowers, Artie’s request was for donations to be made to the American Legion Post 40.
