Apponequet wins Thanksgiving day game against Old Rochester

Nov 28, 2024

MATTAPOISETT — Brody Joly said he didn’t feel the weather conditions during the game.

Under sheets of ice cold rain blowing interminably, the senior running back scored four touchdowns as Apponequet Regional High School beat Old Rochester Regional High School 26-14 in the annual Thanksgiving matchup Thursday, Nov. 28.

“I knew it was going to be a tough game,” Joly said. “I knew we had to get it done today, so came out here today and did what we could do.”

The Lakers end the season 4-6 with the win.

After Old Rochester scored first, Joly ran a 60-yard touchdown for his first score of the day. After Old Rochester scored again, Joly immediately after ran a 59-yard touchdown.

Head coach Zane Fyfe said Joly has “quite the combo of athleticism to make things happen.”

“He’s a moose to bring down, and he’s just a hard, hard runner,” Fyfe said. “If he gets in open space, he can run you over. At the same time, he can outrun you because he’s got speed too.”

Apponeqet has now won three straight Thanksgiving day games against Old Rochester.

Joly said “it means everything” to the team.

“Going out with a win in my last high school game ever, it’s awesome,” he said.

As the Lakers defense stifled the Bulldogs in the second half, lakes of mud and rain formed in the middle of the Old Rochester field. Apponequet’s white and blue-accented uniforms turned brown.

“I didn’t really feel it during the game,” Joly said. “I feel it now. The adrenaline is wearing off. We’ve just got to adapt to the circumstances.”

The win is the last high school football game for the four Apponequet seniors on the team.

Fyfe said they were a “great group of kids.”

“They did a great job helping those younger guys acclimate into varsity football,” Fyfe said. “They’ve left their mark, and we talked about leaving a legacy and I think they left a good one here.”
