Apponequet softball falls to Foxborough deep into playoff run

Jun 10, 2025

LAKEVILLE — The Apponequet Regional High School softball team will not advance to the Final Four after a 9-3 loss to the Foxborough Warriors on Monday, June 9, falling one game short of last year’s playoff run.

The No. 3-seeded Lakers fell to the No. 6-seeded Warriors in a game that began Saturday, June 7, but was suspended due to heavy rainfall after four innings. The Lakers trailed 2-1 when play was stopped.

Lakers Coach Nate Farrington — who has led the team for three years — said it was a tough loss but was grateful that his team advanced so far into the postseason.

“Not a lot of teams make it, especially not this deep,” he said. “It doesn’t feel like it now but in the end it’s going to be a great experience for the younger players. It’s going to be invaluable.”

Players could be heard shouting and cheering for their teammates from the dugout, with special chants echoing across the field. Even as the Warriors held the lead, the Laker’s enthusiasm never waned.

“We support each other and that’s all I’ve really asked of them all year,” Farrington said.

He said the season was about finding the team’s identity on the field.

“Sarah DelVecchio came in and pitched well for us and Reese Taylor, a freshman, came in this year and really took over the mound,” he said. “It was pretty electric for us all year.”

The Lakers finished the 2025 regular season with a 19-6 record. Farrington said the team ultimately found the identity they had been searching for.

Athletic Director Jim Cabucio said the program has been competitive for “decades,” with “a lot” of state championship wins in the 1980s and ’90s.

“The last four years we’ve been very competitive and the last two years even more so,” he said.

Despite the season-ending loss, Farrington said he’s proud of his team’s performance.

“We learned how to win games and played a good conference. Unfortunately, it’s a game, stuff happens and it was a tough loss,” he said.
