Wareham looks to bounce back against Brewster at home
Article By: Joseph McLaughlin
The Cape Cod Baseball League is down to its final four regular-season games, and things have gotten interesting. The Wareham Gatemen still remain the only team with a playoff berth secured, as Wednesday night saw a lot of upsets.
The Gatemen fell to the Bourne Braves 7-3 after Bourne’s four-run eighth inning took away the game. Bourne, however, did not clinch a playoff berth because Falmouth routed Hyannis 13-1 in seven innings.
A similar story happened with the Brewster Whitecaps, the Gatemen’s next opponent. Brewster went to Chatham on Wednesday with a straightforward clinching scenario: win and you're in. Technically, it was a win and a Chatham loss, but both would have come in that game. However, the Anglers kept their postseason hopes alive by shutting out the Whitecaps 10-0 in eight innings.
Both Wareham and Brewster are coming off losses and are looking to bounce back tonight. The Gatemen are also looking to win the season series over the Whitecaps after they took a 2-1 season series lead with a 4-3 win on July 15. Brewster is looking for revenge after their loss to the Anglers and to clinch a playoff spot with a win and a Chatham loss to Falmouth.
Starting Pitchers
The Gatemen will give the start to their right-hander, Bryce Turner (Florida International). Turner has appeared in three games for the Gatemen this summer and will be starting for the first time.
His last appearance was Sunday against the Hyannis Harbor Hawks, where he pitched one scoreless inning with no hits or walks, and a strikeout. His start allows the Gatemen to preserve some pieces of their rotation for the postseason while experimenting to see what they have for depth at the pitching position.
The Whitecaps will start their left-hander Spencer Seid (Georgetown). Seid posts a 2.45 ERA through three appearances, two of which were starts. He has pitched seven and one-third innings with nine hits, two earned runs, three walks, and seven strikeouts.
His last start on July 25 against the Falmouth Commodores went well. He pitched three and one-third innings scoreless, allowed four hits, one walk, and struck out two batters. He will look to shut the Gatemen’s offense down quickly to give his offense the foundation to work.
Players to Watch
For Wareham:
- Chase Krewson (Rutgers) had a good night against Bourne on Tuesday, going two-for-four. He was the only Gatemen with two hits on Wednesday, and he is on a four-game hitting streak.
- Chris McHugh (NC State) also had a good performance on Wednesday, going one-for-three with a walk and two runs scored. In the past two games, he has scored five Gatemen runs.
For Brewster:
- Brendan Lawson (Florida) has been the Whitecaps’ best hitter as of late. He is batting .343 this summer and went two-for-three against the Anglers on Wednesday.
- Dalton Wentz (Wake Forest) also had a good night against the Anglers, going two-for-three. He is batting .269 this summer.
