LAKEVILLE -- The ponds and lakes that gave Lakeville its name can provide welcome relief on hot summer days, particularly during heat waves like the area is currently experiencing.
But as the recent death of a young jet ski passenger showed, they can also pose dangers that can be deadly.
The Lakeville Fire Department offers the following tips to those hitting the water.
Never swim alone. Make sure someone knows where you are and when you will be back.
Watch children closely. Always stay within arm’s reach.
Stay hydrated. Drink plenty of water and take breaks in the shade.
Be aware of hazards. Sudden drop-offs, uneven bottoms, and changing water conditions can be dangerous.
Call 911 immediately if you witness someone in distress.
