Playing Old Rochester is a Thanksgiving tradition, with Apponquet having the record of 24 wins going into the Thursday, Nov. 27 game. Old Rochester had a record of 19 wins before Thursday.
Apponequet did not qualify for the MIAA tournament this year, having a record of 2-9 this season.
Head Coach Zane Fyfe was down about the loss, but still hopeful for the future of his team.
“We've been going back and forth the past few years. Unfortunately, in the last three years, we've had their number. This year, they got ours,” said Fyfe.
He said he is glad the rivalry continues, hoping to come back for a win next year.
“We really respect each other enough to keep this a good rivalry, hard fought game, gritty. But yet, respectful.”
Fyfe lamented a season of injuries possibly holding back his team, but said he is proud of them for being flexible.
“We've been plagued by injury all season and so everybody's stepping up and giving their best efforts,” he said.
In the third quarter, junior Quarterback Paxton Canessa broke the school's record for most passing yards thrown.
“He did a fantastic job for us this year. He took a lot of the pressure just giving everything that we went through this year, being a 2-9 and he took it with his head held high,” said Fyfe.
Fyfe said he is pleased with his leadership and team's strive to never give up, taking the reins and leading his players when it was tough.
“I'm very proud of their effort. They never gave up and always fought to the end. That's one thing that I will say is pretty awesome,” said Fyfe.
